my go-to formula for styling an ottoman — with things already lying around your house
When it comes to home styling, simple is best!
In fact, I’m a big believer in working with what you already have — especially when it comes to zones that are in high-use areas.
Whether your ottoman lives in the living room, a cozy corner of your room, or even the playroom, it’s an easy space to elevate with minimal effort and zero extra spending.
Today I’m sharing my go-to formula for styling an ottoman, using everyday items that you probably already have around the house.
Step 1: Start with a Tray
A tray is the foundation for ottoman styling—it adds structure and helps contain your items so they feel less cluttered.
Look around your home for:
A wooden serving tray
A woven basket tray
A large cutting board (Yes, for real!)
Even a sturdy framed mirror can do the trick
A tray helps anchor your items, especially if your ottoman is upholstered or soft on top.
Step 2: Add a Stack (Books or Magazines)
Books are one of the easiest ways to add height and personality. Stack 2–3 hard-covered books with simple covers, or even a few favorite novels with coordinating colors.
Don’t have books that fit the aesthetic? Wrap them in a paper bag like your old middle school days!
*Pro tip: This is a great place to showcase books you’re actually reading—or want to read. It keeps them visible and accessible.
Step 3: Show off Some Greenery
Every styled surface needs a little life. Think:
A small potted plant
A vase of fresh or faux flowers
A bowl of pinecones or seasonal greenery
Natural elements, like greenery or flowers, soften the space and bring that effortless, comfy feel we all love.
Step 4: Add a Scent
This is the part that brings in warmth and comfort. Try:
A jarred candle
A light-up diffuser
A small bowl of potpourri or dried lavender
*Tip: Light the candle or let the diffuser run while you turn off all the lights and watch a movie. This is so relaxing in the evenings and on rainy days.
Step 5: Practical and Functional Items
Your finished product doesn't have to be picture-perfect. You can include practical and everyday items.
Your TV remote(s)
A stack of coasters
Conversation starter cards
The goal here is to make your everyday items easily accessible. Guests actually prefer a clean, but inviting space. Don't be afraid to show that you live there!
A Few Styling Tips:
Stick to a 2-3 colored palette
Use odd numbers when grouping objects — 3s and 5s are more visually appealing.
Vary in heights and textures to create dimension.
Don’t overcrowd — remember, simple is best!
